FYI, when you say J9 at Eclipse nowadays, that's ambiguous: Eclipse also
hosts the J9 Java VM [1] (which of course is Java 9 compatible but was
called J9 by IBM long before Java 9 was on anyone's roadmap).

No i mean the Java 9 Support for Tycho which was working with the patch
merged yesterday and now the patch was reverted. and i wonder why. for us
it was working fine.

I've tried my best but for now it looks like we need a fresh look at the problem.

the change proposed caused a regression with useJDK=BREE in the eclipse platform build

I think it boils down to being able to configure the JDK to compile against independent of the JDK currently running, see
